What’s going on for Mental Health Week 2014?

There’s so many exciting events taking place to mark Mental Health Week 2014 so we’ve put together these listings so that you don’t miss out on any of the fun.

Irish language discussion on the benefits of sport for good mental health followed by a Sports Yoga and Yoga Nidra class which can be followed live online.

Irish language relay conversation from 12pm 05/10/14 to 1pm 12/10/14 to set the record for the longest Irish language conversation in the world. This training will begin on Monday 6th October for 3 weeks, every Monday for 16 participants from within the Ballymun community.

Laois Connects Week coincides with World Mental Health Week 6th to 12th October.  Laois Connects is all about promoting positive mental health wellbeing and programme is designed from all the partners in the Mental Health collaborative group such as the Health Service Executive, Laois County Council, Laois Partnership, Mental Health Ireland, Laois/Offaly Education Training Board and Laois Sports Partnership.

This is open to all older adults 55+ to come along and learn new skills and increase physical activity in a social environment. Free of charge

This is a non-competitive, inclusive physical activity programme targeting men aged 30+. The programme will be facilitator led and will last for 8 weeks. €2 per session.

Are you aged 30+, male and not very physically active? Do you want to feel fitter, have fun, have more energy and meet new people? If not why not get involved in the Men on the Move at the nearest location to you in Mayo.

Activities will include Movement for Life, seated Pilates, core stability/balance and Bowls. Participants will also get a chance to sit down and have a chat when they are getting tea/coffee and fruit.

The WAM Programme at AHEAD are running an event which will focus on raiding the awareness of engineering and why it can be a great career for everyone, including students with disabilities and mental health difficulties. There will be a speaker who will be presenting about mental health in engineers and also from Engineers Ireland and Dell Ireland.

Dr Mia Mcloughlin, Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist will present on carers’ mental health as part of the College of Psychiatrists 2014 theme ‘Caring for Carers’.

The Dundalk Positive Mental Health Forum will be screening the Robin William’s film “Mrs. Doubtfire” in the IMC Cinema Dundalk. A donation of €5.00 can be made on the night. All proceeds will go towards the various support agencies in Dundalk.

Founder’s Day is a unique event.  It brings together both service providers and service users, and it provides a forum for discussion of the value of mental health and the content of mental health services in our country. This year’s event is dedicated to mental health in our ageing population.  Awarded 5.5 CPD Points.

An Irish Countrywomen’s Association counsellor will be delivering a workshop and covering topics such as time management, examine your stress levels, know your body and de-stress techniques. This event is only for ICA members.

Mindfulness is a powerful tool and an introductory workshop can offer simple and practical day to day tools that everyone can use. This event is only for HAIL tenants and clients.

This one-day national research conference is co-hosted by the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Special Interest Group in Youth Mental Health, the Inspire Ireland Foundation and the National Suicide Research Foundation. The conference will bring together researchers, health professionals, policy-makers and others who care for and work with adolescents and young adults to explore the latest research and innovation in the area of youth mental health.
