Currently, in Ireland, there is no formal procedure to assess the capacity of a person with an intellectual disability.

See Change was invited to a Seminar held by our Partners in Amnesty yesterday morning where a number of experts by experience spoke of enduring major difficulties in making decisions for themselves or in caring for a friend or loved one.

Should Capacity legislation be framed only around disability or should it be for everyone?

Who doesn\'t need help making big decisions? Whether its from a friend, a therapist, a parent or an advocate, most of us turn to someone for advice. And perhaps those who are reluctant to ask for advice need to question whether thier \'capacity\' is all that they imagine it to be.
